The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has established a new Media Coordination Unit (MCU) to strengthen its communication strategy, improve public awareness of tax-related initiatives, and enhance its public image. The development was announced through an official notification issued on October 8, 2026.
The newly formed unit will coordinate, supervise, and implement the tax authority’s strategic communication activities. The initiative aims to ensure that information about tax policies, reforms, facilitation measures, and public service initiatives reaches citizens more effectively.
According to the notification, the Media Coordination Unit has been established with the approval of the FBR Chairman and the SRD Chairman. The unit will begin its work with immediate effect as part of efforts to improve communication between the tax authority and the public.
The establishment of the MCU reflects the FBR’s focus on making its communication activities more organized and consistent. Clear and accessible information can help taxpayers better understand their obligations, available services, and changes introduced through tax reforms.
Under the new arrangement, the Director General of Taxpayer Services (TPS) will serve as the coordinator of the Media Coordination Unit. Meanwhile, the Secretary (Media) has been designated as the unit’s secretary to support coordination and administrative functions.
The notification also names Mr. Irfan Javed, Director General Communications and Public Relations (Customs), and Dr. Misbah Khatana, Director Communications and Public Relations (Customs), as ex officio members of the unit.
Their inclusion is expected to support coordination between the relevant communication departments and help align public messaging across the organization. The unit will be responsible for facilitating the implementation of the FBR Communication Strategy and Action Plan.
The strategy is intended to improve public understanding of tax administration, ongoing reforms, and services available to taxpayers. Effective communication is particularly important for a tax authority, as public awareness can influence compliance, reduce confusion, and help citizens access the correct information about tax procedures.
The FBR regularly deals with issues involving income tax, sales tax, customs regulations, tax filing requirements, and taxpayer facilitation. Communicating updates in a clear and timely manner can help individuals, businesses, and other stakeholders understand regulatory changes and their potential impact.
The formation of the Media Coordination Unit also highlights the importance of public relations in government institutions. A coordinated communication framework can help address misinformation, provide accurate explanations of official decisions, and improve the accessibility of public information.
However, the overall impact of the new unit will depend on how effectively the communication strategy is implemented and how consistently the FBR engages with taxpayers and the wider public.
With the new unit now established, the FBR is seeking to strengthen its communication framework and improve public awareness of its policies and initiatives. The development marks an administrative step toward more coordinated messaging and clearer engagement with taxpayers across Pakistan.
