Study Highlights Growing Cancer Burden in Balochistan as More Than 5,000 Cases Identified

A new study has highlighted the significant cancer burden in Balochistan after researchers examined more than 16,000 biopsy samples collected from different parts of the province.

The research analyzed 16,342 biopsy samples and identified cancer in 5,145 cases. The findings provide an important overview of cancer patterns among patients in Balochistan.

The study was jointly conducted by medical experts from Aga Khan Hospital and Arya Institute of Medical Sciences Quetta. Researchers examined biopsy data to better understand the prevalence and distribution of different cancers across the province.

According to the findings, men accounted for 52 percent of the cancer cases examined, while women represented 48 percent. The relatively close distribution highlights the cancer burden affecting both men and women in the province.

Among men in Balochistan, oesophageal cancer was identified as the most commonly reported type in the study. Researchers recorded 425 cases of oesophageal cancer among adult men.

These cases represented 17.4 percent of all cancer cases recorded among the adult male group included in the research. The finding places oesophageal cancer among the major cancer concerns identified in the province.

The study’s findings could help medical professionals and policymakers better understand the types of cancer requiring greater attention in Balochistan. Reliable local data can play an important role in planning healthcare services and allocating medical resources.
