Pakistani workers seeking employment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) must now submit a police character certificate as part of the visa application process. This new regulation, introduced by the Bureau of Emigration, is designed to improve vetting procedures and address concerns raised by UAE authorities.

Mandatory Compliance for UAE Work Visas

Adnan Paracha, Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Overseas Employment Promoters Association (POEPA), revealed that the UAE’s concerns about law-breaking activities among Pakistani workers led to this policy change. Paracha welcomed the measure, stating that it would foster better compliance with UAE laws and strengthen ties between the two countries.

Reports indicate that certain individuals from Pakistan have been involved in begging and other illegal acts in the UAE, tarnishing the image of the broader Pakistani workforce. The new requirement is a step toward restoring trust and ensuring that workers uphold the host country’s regulations.

Ongoing Visa Challenges for Pakistanis

The UAE has imposed a visit visa ban on individuals from 30 cities in Pakistan, up from 24 cities previously. Over 100,000 Pakistani job seekers have faced significant hurdles in obtaining UAE work visas over the last year, underlining the need for swift resolution of these issues.

The UAE’s position as Pakistan’s second-largest source of remittances highlights its importance to the national economy. In light of these developments, Paracha has called for proactive diplomatic engagement to address visa-related challenges and safeguard economic interests.

Broader Measures to Curb Illegal Activities

As part of its efforts to combat illegal activities abroad, Pakistan has placed over 4,300 individuals on its Exit Control List (ECL). This decision follows discussions between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Saudi counterpart, aimed at preventing Pakistani beggars from traveling to Saudi Arabia and preserving bilateral relations.
