A recent study has raised serious health concerns over popular hair extensions, widely used for adding length, volume, and glamour. Researchers have found that many products contain harmful chemicals, some linked to cancer, prompting urgent warnings from health experts.
Hair extensions remain a staple in the global beauty industry, favored by celebrities such as Elle Macpherson, Ivanka Trump, and Taylor Swift. They provide an instant solution for fuller, more attractive hair but may carry hidden risks.
Scientists at the Silent Spring Institute analyzed 43 hair extension products sold online and found dozens of toxic chemicals, including flame retardants, phthalates, pesticides, styrene, tetrachloroethane, and organotins. Studies have linked these substances to cancer, hormonal disruptions, developmental issues in children, and weakened immune systems.
Lead researcher Dr. Alicia Franklin highlighted that most manufacturers do not fully disclose the chemicals used, leaving consumers unaware of potential long-term risks. She emphasized that because extensions are applied close to the scalp and often styled with heat, chemicals can be released into the air and inhaled, increasing exposure.
Various types of extensions, including clip-ins, tape-ins, wefts, and micro-links, are particularly popular in the UK and US. Experts advise caution, recommending consumers seek chemical-free or certified safe alternatives wherever possible.
As hair extensions continue to grow in popularity, this study serves as an important reminder that beauty should not come at the cost of health. Awareness and informed choices can help users enjoy stylish hair safely.
