Punjab Temporarily Shuts Down Primary Schools and Calls for Cross-Border Smog Dialogue with India

Punjab Implements Temporary School Closures Amid Severe Smog Concerns, Calls for Talks with India

In response to dangerous levels of air pollution, the Punjab government has announced a one-week closure of all public and private primary schools in Lahore, effective from November 4 to 9. This proactive measure was shared by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb during a press briefing at the Chief Minister’s House, where she stressed the need for urgent dialogue with India to tackle the worsening smog crisis affecting both sides of the border.

The Punjab environment department issued a holiday notification, impacting students from nursery to fifth grade. The closure comes as Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached a staggering 1066, far surpassing the threshold of 500, which is classified as “extremely hazardous.” Aurangzeb pointed to toxic winds carrying pollutants from neighboring Indian cities, such as Amritsar and Chandigarh, as contributing factors to Lahore’s dire air quality.

Strict Actions and Public Advisory for Smog Reduction

The provincial government has also taken action to curb local pollution sources. Over 550 illegal kilns have been demolished to minimize emissions, and funds and eco-friendly vehicles have been distributed to farmers to discourage the traditional but harmful practice of crop burning. Additionally, there is increased monitoring of construction sites and industrial zones to enforce stricter emissions controls. Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of public cooperation in combating smog, encouraging citizens to stay indoors, wear masks, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

The minister highlighted the need for coordinated efforts with India, as smog does not recognize borders. While the Punjab government can regulate domestic sources, she noted that discussions with India could prove essential in addressing the larger environmental impact. Punjab, she assured, remains committed to advancing anti-smog initiatives and raising awareness about health precautions.
