The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has identified excessive Virtual Private Network (VPN) usage as a key factor behind the recent internet slowdown in Pakistan. According to PTA’s report, the widespread use of VPNs has significantly increased the demand on available bandwidth, resulting in sluggish speeds across the country.

Bandwidth Strain and Ministry of IT’s Role

PTA has submitted a detailed report to the Ministry of Information Technology (IT), emphasizing the urgent need to expand the country’s bandwidth infrastructure. This recommendation comes amid rising internet demand driven by VPNs, which many users rely on for accessing restricted content and secure online activity.

Submarine Cable Disruption Compounds Issues

Adding to the internet woes, PTA confirmed a fault in the submarine cable AAE-1 near Qatar. This cable, one of seven international undersea links supporting Pakistan’s internet connectivity, plays a vital role in ensuring smooth international traffic. The authority stated that technical teams are actively working to resolve the issue but cautioned users about temporary disruptions in service quality.

Internet users across Pakistan have reported slower access to major platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Some platforms have even experienced partial suspension, leaving millions frustrated by the reduced speeds and limited connectivity.
