Pakistan International Airlines Expands Global Connectivity
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has made a strong comeback on the international front, reinstating eight key routes over the past six months. According to details shared by the Aviation Ministry in the National Assembly, these routes include major destinations across the Middle East and Europe.
Key Restored Routes and Aircraft Details
PIA has resumed flights from:
- Islamabad to Paris – Reopened after a four-and-a-half-year suspension, now operated by Boeing 777.
- Turbat to Sharjah and Al Ain – Revived after four and five months, respectively, using ATR aircraft.
- Gwadar to Muscat – Operational again after 13 months, also utilizing ATR aircraft.
- Quetta to Jeddah – Restored after more than three years with ATR flights.
- Faisalabad to Jeddah and Madinah – Relaunched after three years and four months, now serviced by Airbus A320.
- Lahore to Kuwait – Back in action after seven months with Airbus A320 operations.
Overcoming Operational Hurdles
PIA had initially suspended seven routes due to aircraft shortages, while the Islamabad-Paris route was previously affected by European Union restrictions. However, these challenges are now being addressed, leading to resumed services and further expansion plans.
Future Plans: Flights to UK, Europe, and North America
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recently revealed that PIA is set to restart direct flights to the UK by February 2025. Additionally, the airline is preparing to launch services to 19 European destinations, including Barcelona and Milan. Plans are also underway to introduce flights to the United States and Canada, which would mark a major milestone in PIA’s revival strategy.
