Pakistan’s average inflation rate more than doubled during the first four months of the fiscal year 2026-27, reflecting continued pressure on household budgets and the cost of living. The average rate reached 10.05 percent between July and October, compared with 4.79 percent recorded during the same period last year.
The figures represent a 109.8 percent increase in the average inflation rate compared with the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation stood at 9.61 percent year-on-year in October 2026. Although the latest reading was lower than September’s 10.26 percent, it remained considerably higher than the 6.25 percent recorded in October 2025.
The October inflation figure also came in above market expectations. A Bloomberg survey had estimated inflation at 9.5 percent, while the official reading reached 9.61 percent.
The latest figures indicate that inflation remained elevated despite a month-on-month easing in the annual rate. The decline from September to October was relatively modest, while the comparison with the previous year highlights the increased price pressure experienced during the current fiscal period.
The rise in average inflation during July-October is particularly significant because it provides a broader picture of price movements over several months rather than focusing on a single monthly reading.
For households, sustained inflation can affect purchasing power by increasing the amount of money required to meet everyday expenses. Consumers may face greater pressure when prices of essential goods and services rise faster than household incomes.
Businesses can also be affected by higher inflation, particularly when operating expenses, transportation costs and input prices increase. Such conditions may influence production decisions, pricing strategies and consumer demand across different sectors of the economy.
The difference between the monthly and cumulative figures is also important. October’s year-on-year CPI rate declined from September, but the average inflation rate for the first four months of FY27 remained significantly above last year’s level.
The figures released by PBS, along with the research note by Topline Securities, provide an indication of the inflation trend during the opening months of the current fiscal year.
With average inflation reaching 10.05 percent in the July-October period, economic conditions and future price movements will remain important factors for households, businesses and policymakers in Pakistan.
