Pakistan to Witness Total Lunar Eclipse During Ramadan on March 3, 2026

Pakistan will observe a total lunar eclipse during the holy month of Ramadan, with the celestial event scheduled for March 3, 2026. The announcement was made by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which released detailed timing and visibility information.

Commonly known as a “Blood Moon,” a total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. During this alignment, Earth’s shadow falls across the lunar surface, temporarily blocking direct sunlight.

According to the PMD, the eclipse will begin at 1:44pm (PST). The partial phase is expected to start at 2:50pm, followed by the beginning of totality at 4:05pm. The eclipse will reach its peak at 4:34pm, with totality ending at 5:03pm. The event will conclude completely by 7:23pm.

Officials noted that visibility in Pakistan will be partial. Since some phases will occur during daylight hours, observers in certain areas may not be able to witness the complete transition. However, parts of the eclipse are still expected to be visible depending on local conditions.

During totality, the Moon will likely appear reddish in color. Astronomers explain that this phenomenon occurs because Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter blue wavelengths of sunlight, allowing longer red wavelengths to bend and illuminate the Moon.

The March 3 eclipse is being described as one of the most significant astronomical events of 2026. It will be the only total lunar eclipse of the year and the last of its kind until December 31, 2028.

Globally, the eclipse will be visible across large parts of Asia, Australia, North America, and South America, subject to weather and regional timing differences. Skywatchers around the world are expected to closely follow the event.

Experts advise enthusiasts to check local timing updates and weather forecasts for optimal viewing opportunities. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse can be observed safely with the naked eye.

The rare alignment during Ramadan adds to the spiritual and scientific interest surrounding the event, making it a highly anticipated spectacle for observers across Pakistan and beyond.
