A new global cybersecurity threat, the “Ploutus” malware, has emerged as a major risk to Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), including those in Pakistan. This sophisticated malware allows hackers to remotely trigger unauthorized cash withdrawals without needing access to customer accounts or banking systems.
The warning comes via an advisory from 1LINK, which has circulated the alert to all scheduled banks across the country. The malware essentially gives attackers direct control over compromised ATMs, making it a significant concern for both financial institutions and consumers.
Security experts warn that Ploutus variants have been increasingly detected worldwide, targeting vulnerable ATM models and exploiting outdated software or weak operational protocols. Banks are urged to implement strict monitoring, software updates, and additional physical security measures to mitigate risks.
Consumers are advised to remain vigilant when using ATMs and report any suspicious behavior or machine irregularities to their respective banks immediately. While no major incidents in Pakistan have been reported yet, the advisory highlights the growing need for cybersecurity preparedness in financial operations.
