Lahore Police Stop “Immoral” Gathering, Block Joyland Film Screening

Punjab Police have launched a major crackdown in Lahore, halting what they described as an “immoral event” and related activities. The operation led to multiple arrests, including the main suspect behind the gathering.

Viral Videos Trigger Action

The police said that videos from the event, which quickly spread across social media, prompted immediate action. A formal case was registered, and raids are ongoing to apprehend others linked to the incident.

DIG Operations Lahore issued a strong warning, stating that no activity against Islamic values and Pakistani law will be allowed. He emphasized that spreading obscenity in the name of parties or photo shoots is a punishable crime.

Ban on Joyland Screening in Lahore

Authorities also moved to stop the scheduled screening of the banned film Joyland. The movie, Pakistan’s first to win at Cannes, was selected for the Oscars but has faced domestic bans since 2022.

The screening was planned for August 17, organized by OLOMOPOLO Media and Ticketwala, with a Q&A session featuring director Saim Sadiq. Officials confirmed it would not be allowed to proceed.

Maria B’s Reaction

Fashion designer Maria B expressed her approval of the ban on X (formerly Twitter). She called it a victory for families seeking to protect children from what she described as “harmful agendas.” She urged parents and institutions to work together in educating children about such issues.

Broader Cultural Debate

The crackdown has reignited debate in Pakistan over the balance between creative freedom and cultural norms. While Joyland received global praise, its themes continue to fuel controversy at home.
