Sindh Cabinet Approves Ambitious Project
The Sindh government has announced a visionary project to revamp Karachi’s public transport system by introducing 8,000 electric buses. The initiative aims to address the city’s transportation challenges while promoting eco-friendly solutions.
Detailed Phased Deployment
The electric bus program will be implemented in three phases:
- Initial Phase: 500 buses will be launched within the first year, with 50 buses already in operation on major city routes.
- Second Phase: An additional 1,500 buses will strengthen the fleet.
- Final Phase: Between 4,000 and 6,000 buses will be added over four years, supported by infrastructure like solar-powered charging stations and modern depots.
Eco-Friendly Energy Solutions
A 1GW solar plant is being developed to ensure the project’s sustainability. This renewable energy source will power the buses and significantly reduce Karachi’s carbon footprint, aligning with global sustainability goals.
Highlights from the Pilot Project
On May 30, 2024, a pilot project featuring 50 electric buses commenced. Operated under a rent-to-own model by the National Energy & Transport Corporation (NETC), these buses offer a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
Government’s Financial Commitment
The Sindh government has earmarked Rs412.50 million for the fiscal year 2025’s final quarter. Additionally, Rs1.65 billion will be allocated annually over eight years to cover operational costs, ensuring the project’s smooth implementation.
