Evan Rachel Wood has officially confirmed she won’t be appearing in Practical Magic 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 cult favorite. In a heartfelt Instagram Story posted on July 11, 2025, the actress candidly revealed that she had not been invited to reprise her role as Kylie Owens—despite her willingness to participate, even in a limited capacity.
“I offered my services,” she wrote, “even if it was one scene or one line.” Wood, now 37, added, “I was told they are re-casting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice.”
Her announcement comes amid growing anticipation for the sequel, which sees the return of original stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the Owens sisters. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also return as the eccentric aunts, while new cast members include Joey King, Maisie Williams, and Xolo Maridueña.
Although producers promise the sequel will honor the original’s whimsical legacy, many fans are upset by Wood’s absence. Some have pointed out that Bullock and Kidman are executive producers—possibly influencing the decision to recast Kylie.
Wood first played the daughter of Bullock’s character at just 11 years old, contributing a youthful magic to the original film that resonated with audiences. Her dignified message struck a chord online, with fans flooding social media to voice their disappointment and support.
While Practical Magic 2 continues its production, the recasting of Kylie Owens remains a controversial choice. Fans will be watching closely to see how the new generation fits into the Owens family legacy.
