Federal Minister for Communications and Privatisation Abdul Aleem Khan has unveiled Pakistan’s bold plan to convert 30% of all vehicles to electric by 2030. This transformative goal is a cornerstone of the government’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, designed to address climate change and promote sustainable urban mobility.

Building EV Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future

Aleem Khan announced that significant progress is underway to establish the infrastructure necessary for EV adoption, including the installation of charging stations across the country. Public awareness campaigns are also being launched to educate citizens about the environmental and economic benefits of electric vehicles.

During the Ministerial Roundtable at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Khan emphasized the role of green urban transport and renewable energy in combating air pollution and mitigating climate challenges. The session brought together ministers and international bodies, including the United Nations, European Commission, and International Transport Forum, to discuss sustainable transport solutions.

Innovative Projects in Motion

Highlighting Pakistan’s green initiatives, Aleem Khan revealed that Karachi’s first biomethane hybrid bus fleet is set to revolutionize public transport by reducing fuel costs to zero. The government is also exploring Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models to enhance the long-term sustainability of the National Green Transport Project.

Addressing the Dual Threats of Climate Change and Smog

Aleem Khan stressed the urgent need for micro-level interventions in urban transport to combat rising levels of smog and air pollution. These measures aim to improve human health and the overall quality of life, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

He also participated in a session titled “Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond,” focusing on green technology adoption, smog reduction, and the digital transformation of the transport sector.

Khan extended gratitude to Azerbaijan’s Minister of Transport Rashid Nabiov and Minister of Economy Mikael Jabarov for their collaborative discussions, which provided valuable insights and strengthened international ties.
