The federal government has officially declared public holidays on June 25 and 26, 2026, in observance of 9 and 10 Muharram-ul-Haram, marking the occasion of Ashura across Pakistan.
The decision was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following which the Cabinet Division issued a formal notification confirming the two-day holiday period. As a result, government offices and public institutions throughout the country will remain closed on Thursday, June 25, and Friday, June 26.
According to the notification, the holidays will be observed by all federal government departments and offices operating under both five-day and six-day work schedules. The move is intended to facilitate religious observances and ensure smooth arrangements for Ashura-related activities nationwide.
Muharram is one of the most significant months in the Islamic calendar, and Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram, holds deep religious importance for Muslims around the world. Across Pakistan, religious gatherings, processions, and commemorative events are organized to honor the sacrifices associated with the historic events of Karbala.
Authorities across various provinces are expected to implement comprehensive security and traffic management plans during the two-day holiday period. Special arrangements are typically made to ensure the safety of participants attending processions and religious congregations.
In addition to security measures, local administrations often coordinate with emergency services, health departments, and municipal authorities to facilitate smooth observance of Muharram events. Temporary traffic diversions and road closures may also be introduced in major cities where large processions are scheduled.
The announcement provides clarity for government employees, businesses, educational institutions, and the general public as preparations for Muharram observances continue across the country. While the federal notification applies to government offices, private organizations and businesses may announce their own schedules in accordance with local regulations and operational requirements.
The two consecutive holidays on Thursday and Friday will also create an extended break for many employees, particularly those who already observe weekends on Saturday and Sunday. However, essential services, including healthcare facilities, law enforcement agencies, and emergency response departments, are expected to continue operations as required.
The federal government’s decision reflects the importance of Ashura in Pakistan’s religious and cultural calendar and aims to facilitate peaceful and respectful observance of the occasion nationwide.
