Italy Raises Student Visa Financial Requirement to €10,179, Impacting Pakistani Applicants

Italy has significantly increased the financial proof requirement for international students applying for study visas, creating new challenges for applicants from Pakistan and other countries. The updated rule requires students to show €10,179.85 per year as proof of sufficient funds.

According to the official Universitaly portal, the revised requirement applies to those seeking a national Type D visa for university enrollment. These updated procedures will remain valid for the academic years 2026–2027 and 2027–2028.

The new threshold marks a sharp increase from the previously referenced amount of around €6,000. For Pakistani students, this translates to approximately Rs. 3.2 million, depending on exchange rates. As a result, applicants must now prepare stronger financial documentation to meet the updated criteria.

Authorities have emphasized that the funds must come from lawful and traceable sources. Italian diplomatic missions may review bank statements, income records, and overall financial stability to verify the authenticity of the funds presented in visa applications.

Students are encouraged to maintain the required amount in their own bank accounts. However, financial support can also come from immediate family members, including relatives up to the fourth degree. In all cases, applicants must ensure that the source of funds is clear and consistent with declared income.

The new guidelines also caution against temporary fund arrangements. Embassies may examine account activity to ensure that the money has not been deposited solely to meet visa requirements without a legitimate background.

Scholarships remain a valid form of financial support, but only if officially awarded. Simply applying for or being eligible for a scholarship is not sufficient proof. Students must provide confirmed documentation from recognized institutions to include it in their visa application.

Despite meeting academic admission requirements, visa approval is not guaranteed. The final decision rests with the Italian Embassy in Islamabad or relevant consulate, which may also evaluate factors such as academic background, study plans, and migration risk.

For Pakistani students planning to study in Italy, the updated policy underscores the importance of early financial preparation. Applicants should ensure their documentation is complete, transparent, and aligned with official requirements before submitting their visa files.

Regularly checking updates from official platforms and diplomatic missions will also be crucial, as visa policies can evolve based on regulatory and economic conditions.
