A new hybrid powertrain unveiled ahead of the upcoming Beijing Auto Show 2026 could significantly change how automakers design electric and hybrid vehicles. The system is aimed at allowing manufacturers to convert existing electric vehicle platforms into hybrid models without requiring a complete redesign.
The technology, named the X-Range C15 Direct Drive, has been developed by Horse Powertrain, a UK-based company backed by Renault and Geely. It is designed to integrate directly into current EV architectures, offering carmakers a more flexible and cost-efficient way to build multiple types of electrified vehicles on a single platform.
This approach could allow a single base design to support battery electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and range-extended electric vehicles. By reducing the need for separate platforms, manufacturers may be able to lower development costs and speed up production cycles as demand for different vehicle types continues to shift globally.
The system combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, transmission, and two electric motors within one compact unit. One motor functions as a generator, while the other connects to the transmission output shaft, enabling different driving modes depending on conditions.
It can operate in a series-hybrid configuration, where the electric motor alone drives the wheels while the engine generates electricity. This setup closely resembles range-extender systems already used in some electric vehicles, offering improved efficiency and flexibility.
Horse Powertrain has stated that the base configuration supports rear-wheel drive, but manufacturers can add an additional electric drive unit at the front to create all-wheel-drive variants. This modular approach gives automakers more freedom in designing vehicle performance setups.

The system will be available in two versions. A naturally aspirated engine is designed for smaller vehicles, producing around 70 kW or 95 horsepower, while a turbocharged version for larger models delivers up to 120 kW or 160 horsepower.
Alongside this system, the company is also expected to showcase additional hybrid technologies, including the H12 hybrid engine concept, which reportedly achieves fuel efficiency of up to 71.3 mpg under WLTP testing standards.
Industry experts suggest that innovations like this could play an important role in bridging the gap between fully electric and hybrid mobility, especially as automakers navigate fluctuating global demand and evolving emissions regulations.
