Record Smog Levels Force Punjab into Emergency Mode

The Punjab government has declared a health emergency in Lahore and Multan as the two cities grapple with unprecedented smog levels. Lahore has cemented its position as the most polluted city globally, while Multan faces equally dire conditions. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced an extension of school closures and restrictions on public activities to mitigate the health impact of toxic air.

Emergency Measures to Combat Smog

Educational institutions across eight smog-hit districts have been instructed to remain closed, with online classes replacing in-person sessions. The government has also banned most outdoor activities and introduced restricted operating hours for restaurants and businesses. Construction activities in Lahore and Multan will remain suspended for the next week to curb dust emissions.

Adding to the urgency, the AQI in Lahore reached a dangerous 732 before stabilizing to 669. The thick smog has caused a surge in respiratory illnesses, with hospitals reporting over 1.9 million smog-related cases last month. Citizens are advised to wear masks and avoid outdoor exposure.

Court Demands Comprehensive Smog Policy

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has emphasized the need for a 10-year smog control strategy, urging the government to adopt innovative solutions like urban forestry and electric buses. Justice Shahid Karim also highlighted the importance of banning housing projects on agricultural land to reduce deforestation and its subsequent environmental impact.

Punjab has allocated funds to introduce electric buses by mid-2025. However, experts warn that these measures must be accelerated to address the recurring crisis effectively.

Blame Game and Regional Challenges

The Punjab government partially attributes its toxic air to cross-border pollution from India, where similar smog levels have been recorded. Officials plan to raise the issue diplomatically, though collaborative solutions remain uncertain in the tense political climate.
